It’s known across the world as the city that never sleeps, and New York has certainly lived up to that reputation in a new survey. (Featured image by jerryfergusonphotography)

The Big Apple has been voted the best city in the world for a night out, in an international tourist survey by Hotels.com.

With its trendy bars and nightclubs, its late night cafes and non-stop party vibe, New York was head and shoulders above its European rivals.

The only city to come close to the Big Apple in the survey was another popular US city – Las Vegas. But while Europe missed out on the top spots, the rest of the top ten was dominated by some of the continent’s best cities.

“New York and Las Vegas always provide an amazing travel adventure,” said Alison Couper, a Hotels.com spokesperson.

“But it is the variety amongst the European cities that makes them so interesting and exciting for travellers from all around the globe.”

The highest-ranking European city for a night out was our very own capital, which beat the likes of Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin into third place.

The top five was rounded off by the French capital in fourth place and Barcelona in fifth, while Amsterdam, Berlin and Madrid all made an appearance in the top ten.

Singing the praises of Europe’s cities, Ms Couper added: “There are many different experiences to be gained on the continent.

“Whether it’s a night out in the infamous clubs of Berlin, the floating restaurants in Amsterdam or the small, intimate bars and music venues of Paris – although it’s nice to see that London is coming in above even these notorious party capitals.”

London’s high ranking in the survey completes a mixed bag of reviews of late. The capital was recently voted one of the rudest cities in the world, with only Moscow viewed as more unfriendly.

So you may not get many smiles when you visit London, but at least you can have the best night out in Europe!
