The elegant city of Vicenza, situated between Venice and Verona in Northern Italy, is renowned for its incredible architecture, cosmopolitan atmosphere and rich history. Designated as a UNESCO heritage site, Vicenza is known as the “City of Palladio”, the influential Italian Renaissance architect whose decorative buildings and palazzos can be found throughout the city. Of the 23 Palladio buildings, one of the most famous is the Teatro Olimpico, a 16th Century theatre, which is one of only three still remaining and is considered to be one of his greatest masterpieces. You can also view many of Palladio’s magnificent palazzos by walking around Vicenza city centre, such as the Palazzo Chiericati, now the home of the museum and art gallery, and the Palazzo del Capitaniato, which houses the town council. In the Piazza dei Signori, the city’s main square, stands the Basilica Palladiana, an imposing landmark that was also designed by Palladio. If you are enthralled by the exquisite architecture within the city, there are also many beautiful churches to discover, including the Cathedral of Vicenza dating from the 11th Century and the Basilica of Santi Felice and Fortunato, which was built in the 4th Century. Vicenza’s ancient origins as a Roman city are still in evidence and you can explore the city’s heritage at the Criptoporticus, a lavish underground Roman structure at the Piazza del Duomo. In addition to all these incredible landmarks, the city has several museums, including the Natural History and Archeological Museum, which traces the city’s history through the ages.
The best way to explore Vicenza is on foot, but if you are feeling energetic, you can hire a bicycle. There is a good bus service within Vicenza, which can also take you to other destinations, such as Milan or Venice. Travel by train is also easy, as Vicenza railway station can be found to the south of the city and offers connections to other Italian cities between Milan and Venice.
The closest airport to Vicenza is Verona Villafranca Airport (VRN), which is located just outside the neighbouring city of Verona at a distance of 45 miles (72 km) from Vicenza. There is an Aerobus service that runs from the airport to Verona Porta Nuova railway station. You can then get on a high speed train to reach Vicenza. Alternatively, you can get a taxi from the taxi rank outside the Arrivals Terminal. If you prefer to hire your own car, there are several major car rental companies located at the airport.
Venice Marco Polo Airport is the gateway to the beautiful and romantic city of Venice, with its islands, canals and gondolas, located an easy 8km (5 miles) from central Venice.
The airport’s single terminal is easy to navigate and consists of three floors. The departures area is on the first floor and arrivals is on the ground floor. There are loads of shops and restaurants, including duty-free options and plenty of high-quality souvenirs and gifts, just in case you forgot to get them in Venice.
There are several airlines that offer flights to Venice Marco Polo Airport. These include a couple of low-cost carriers that connect Venice to cities across Europe, such as London, Manchester, Zurich, Leeds and Geneva. There are also flights to Venice Airport from Doha, New York and Istanbul as well as many other cities across the world.
Venice Marco Polo Airport is a great facility to use when travelling to this magical city. There are plenty of amenities at the airport and it is well connected to the city, making it the perfect choice when flying to Venice.
