Why visit Bucaramanga?
One of the largest cities in Colombia, Bucaramanga has acquired a number of nicknames due to the large amount of parks contained within its expanse. Known as both the City of Parks and Colombia’s Beautiful City, the many green spaces of Bucaramanga are contrasted by the high-rise buildings which make the city the bustling metropolis that it is. In fact, the city is just as busy at night as it is during the day, the streets packed with revellers taking in the vibrant nightlife scene. The cuisine on offer at the restaurants in Bucaramanga has a truly international feel, with Mexican, Thai and Italian just a few of the many options available.
Located just outside the city itself, the spectacular Chicamocho National Park is arguably the most popular tourist attraction in the area. One of the best ways of taking in the stunning natural scenery here is by travelling on the cable car. At almost four miles (6.4 km) in length, the cable car at Chicamocho is one of the longest of its type in the world and offers a memorable experience to all who ride it.
Buses are plentiful in Bucaramanga and the majority of services will pick up and drop off passengers almost anywhere along route. There are now dedicated bus lanes in the city, making journeys much quicker and more comfortable. The main bus station here is modern and clean and it is possible to travel to almost any destination in Colombia from here.
All taxis in Bucaramanga have meters fitted and are fairly inexpensive. For personal safety, it is advisable to pre-book taxis rather than hailing one in the street.
Getting from the Airport to Bucaramanga
Bucaramanga is served by Palonegro International Airport (BGA), which is located approximately 18 miles (29 km) from the city centre. The airport is linked to the city by a major road, so travelling to Bucaramanga by a hire car is relatively straightforward and direct. There are regular bus services which link the city with the airport, with most of the journeys terminating at Bucaramanga’s main bus station.
