Passengers flying into Gatwick Airport can look forward to an improved experience when they arrive, now that work on an arrivals extension has been completed.

The extension in the South Terminal, which hosts flights from easyJet, XL Airways, Virgin Atlantic and others, was completed ahead of schedule. The new-look baggage reclaim hall is “a lighter, more spacious environment”.

It now provides eight baggage belts, five of which are brand new and longer than the others. There is also significantly more room so that passengers can avoid the pushing and shoving that is a familiar feature of baggage reclaim halls in overcrowded airports around the world.

New flight information display screens will also make it easier for passengers to find the baggage carousel they are looking for.

Construction on the extension began in summer 2004 and was completed on budget by contractor Taylor Woodrow and engineering service Crownhouse Technology.

In related news, Conservative MP Andrew Pelling has called for the closure of the Gatwick Express train service, arguing that the track space is needed for commuter services.

However, 57 other MPs have signed a Commons motion against axing it and its advocates argue that the link is particularly important ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
