We all know how hard it can be to get sleep of any kind on a flight, let alone a full night’s worth. But it seems that passengers in Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class are going have a better chance than the rest of us.

The airline is training cabin crew members (voted the hottest cabin crew in a recent survey) in the art of whispering, to ensure the high-paying fliers are disturbed as little as possible.

The special day-long courses train members of staff to whisper at a level of between 20 and 30 decibels, which the airline says will have a calming effect on passengers.

It may seem a little odd, but Virgin Atlantic is taking its whispering training very seriously.

The training has been put together with the help of several speech experts, and has been trialled on test flights and in focus groups.

The airline has assigned its customer service training supervisor Richard Fitzgerald as the in-house whispering coach.

“His specialist training will also ensure that no passenger is unduly disturbed while sleeping and that all passengers wake up and arrive at their destination feeling rested and refreshed,” Virgin Atlantic said.

As well as becoming expert whisperers, airline staff will be trained in how to provide the best night’s sleep possible for passengers.

This includes everything from becoming more tactile, to “reading” passengers, to even waking them up in the gentlest possible way.

“It is incredibly important that all Virgin Atlantic’s cabin crew have their skills honed in order to provide the most comfortable experience possible for our passengers,” said Mr Fitzgerald.

“The new Upper Class Dream Suite is the ultimate in luxury and comfort and it’s touches like these that make our in-flight service second to none.”
