London was one of a number of UK cities which practically came to a standstill yesterday in order to celebrate the Sport Relief Mile.

Thousands of people took to the streets of London, Belfast, Glasgow and other cities to raise some cash for the popular charity.

This follows the Friday Sport Relief charity television marathon, which raised more than £50 million.

The UK is, of course, not the only sports-loving nation in Europe. For fitness freaks and those who just enjoy sport as a hobby, here are some of the best destinations in Europe to indulge your active side.

France

Skiing in the French Alps is a favoured pastime for many sporting enthusiasts. Not only is it popular among avid skiing fanatics, but it is also the perfect place for beginners to hit the slopes and learn the ropes.

Portugal

If cycling is more up your street then head to Portugal for a trip across the Algarve. Cycling from the Spanish border to Europe’s most Southern point is something all cycling fans should try at least once.

Sicily

Ever wanted to combine your love for climbing with volcanoes? Well, now you can, thanks to the increasingly popular Sicilian Volcano Hike. The unique journey involves climbing three active volcanoes, includes one of Europe’s most famous landmarks – Mt Etna.
