New York City’s cyclists and pedestrians may sometimes think they own the streets, but they really don’t. For at least 362 days the automobile rules the road!
But, the Summer Streets programme gives people the chance to take some of the city’s most valuable public space back. On three consecutive Saturdays each summer, nearly seven miles of NYC’s streets are opened for people to play, walk, bike, and breathe.
Summer Streets runs in the morning from 7am to 1pm. The route extends from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, along Park Avenue and the connecting streets.
There are loads of different activities – all free! – based at six “rest stops” along the route. Participants can try out a new exercise, such as yoga or tai chi, get a massage, or even take a salsa lesson.
For anyone who’s spent any time in New York, seeing Park Avenue filled with hundreds of walkers and bikers without a car or truck in view is quite a bizarre and arresting sight. Definitely worth taking a stroll through the city.
