Holidaymakers hiring cars while abroad should opt for diesel-powered vehicles, according to Telegraph travel columnist Nick Trend.

Diesel cars are the most cost-effective option, said Trend, so long as the initial cost of hiring the vehicle is not “significantly more expensive” than a traditional petrol car.

“This is now true of many European countries including Spain (111p per litre [of diesel] compared with 117p for petrol), Portugal (118p/137p), Italy (124p/135p) and Greece (128p/146p),” Trend said.

The expert also suggested other money saving tips, such as advising parents to bring their own car seats for their children with them when hiring a car abroad.
