Some airlines don’t charge a penny, others £50 per flight

There’s no business like snow business. Cheapflights.co.uk looks at the cost of transporting your skis or snowboard on scheduled flights this winter.

Airline Cost? Need to know
Air Canada Ski equipment counts as part of your free baggage allowance (one bag, max. weight per bag, 23kg, in Economy). One additional bag costs CAD $100 (approx £55). Oversize charge waived for skis and snow board, and no charge for ski/snow boots (if outside the free baggage allowance) when they are carried along with skis/snowboard. Pre-register at least 24 hours before the flight. Overweight charges of CAD $100 apply.
Air France Part of conventional baggage allowance as long as they are packed in a case which does not exceed 300cm in length. Additional baggage allowance fees (for over 23kg or longer than 158cm) depend upon route. Notify sales department for confirmation in advance of travel.
Austrian Airlines One set of ski- or snowboard equipment (per person) is free of charge except for flights to/from/via USA and Canada. Must notify the airline in advance.
British Airways No extra cost if part of the free baggage allowance and up to 190cm in length. Skis and snowboards must be packed in a recognised ski or snowboard bag.
EasyJet Extra sporting goods baggage fee of £30 online (£40 at airport) one way. Skis cannot exceed 20kg. Sporting goods allowance may not be used for carriage of any other kind of baggage.
Flybe £30 fee per set of equipment, per sector. Prebook (via call centre) within 24 hours of making booking. There is a limit on the number of skis carried, due to size of aircraft. If there is no space you can cancel booking with no penalty within 24 hours.
Germanwings No extra cost. Each passenger may bring up to three pairs of skis/snowboards, arranged during booking or up to 30 minutes before departure.
Jet2 £30 per flight per item if booked online. Maximum weight of 20kg applies.
Lufthansa Sporting equipment is included in the Free Baggage Allowance if it meets the requirements (depend on the type of ticket) Fees of €50 within Europe or €100 inter-continental apply for excess weight. Pre-register at least 24 hours before the flight.
Ryanair £40 one way per item (up to 20kg) if booked online, or £45 at airport. Excess rates apply. Ryanair warns that skis and snowboards are ”inherently unsuitable for carriage”.
SAS One ski cover (skis/snowboard, ski sticks and bootbag with boots and helmet) weighing up to 23kg may be carried. If heavier, excess charges apply. Request the carriage of ski equipment in advance of travel.
Swiss Free transport of one pair of skis, one pair of poles, one pair of boots (even if in separate bag) and one helmet as part of the Free Baggage Allowance. If the sports equipment contains more than the above, excess baggage rates of €50 for Europe and €100 for Inter-continental flights apply.
