A true part of Parisian culture, there’s nothing like a visit to the local farmer’s market to feel as if you’re living the French dream. With most open-air markets held at least twice a week, it’s the perfect chance to live like a local and grab some fresh fruit to munch on when you need a break from croissants and pains au chocolat. We’ve uncovered six of city’s best markets for you to visit on your next stay in Paris.

1. Marché Bio des Batignolles

Lovers of organic produce will fall hard for this Batignolles market. Roam, pause and engage in broken-French or English with the stallholders and leave with bags of fresh food minus the toxins.  Metro: Brochant, Line 13

2. Marché Daumesnil

Unless you live in the area, it’s unlikely you’ll hear about Marché Daumesnil. Which is rather strange considering it is the longest open-air market in the city and is open every Tuesday and Friday morning. Brimming with producers from the Ile-de-France area, if you’re after fresh fruit and veggies, a bunch of flowers, seafood, or cheese and cured meats, this authentic Parisian market has got the goods.

Metro: Daumesnil or Dugommier, Line 6

3. Marché d’Aligre

If markets with vibrant colour, noise, diversity and loads of action are the kind that you search for, then put Marché d’Aligre on your Paris to-do list. Located along rue d’Aligre, this local favourite is open in the mornings, six-days of the week and offers very reasonably priced options. Perfect for a weekday rendezvous!

4. Marché Biologique Raspail

Prices may be a bit steeper here than other markets around Paris but that’s what you get when you’re shopping for organic food in an upscale neighbourhood. If you can put that aside, these markets, expanding between two Metro stations, are a perfect place to wile away a lazy Sunday morning. Tip: Avoid the crowds and the tourists by arriving early.

Metro: Rennes, Line 12

5. Marché Place Monge

Located in a picturesque square in an affluent area of the Latin Quartier, Marché Place Monge has been serving up fresh goods to Parisians since 1921. Open Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from 7am, this charming market is the perfect place to stock up on lunch supplies for a picnic in the nearby Jardin des Arènes.

Metro: Place Monge, Line 7

6. Marché Richard Lenoir

One of the most famous open-air markets in Paris, Marché Richard Lenoir showcases the best of French food along endless aisles of stalls right in the heart of Bastille. A bustling hive of activity, visit on a Sunday and your taste buds will be tempted by flavourful fruit, French wine and straight-from-the-sea seafood from one of Paris’s best fishmongers, Jacky Lorenzo.

Metro: Bastille, Line 1, 5 and 8
