East Midlands Airport has won the Best Regional UK Airport and UK Airport of the year awards at this year’s British Travel Awards 2011.

This is the airport’s fourth successive travel award triumph in less than three months. The popular East Midlands Airport beat 13 competitors to the title of Best Regional UK Airport, including Newcastle, Leeds-Bradford and Belfast City Airport.

East Midlands Airport also won the Best UK Airport of the year ahead of major airports such as London Heathrow, London Gatwick and Liverpool John Lennon Airport. The awards ceremony was held in Battersea Evolution, London earlier this week.

Brad Miller, Managing Director of East Midlands Airport, said: “We are truly honoured to have received two British Travel Awards, voted for by the UK’s leading travel industry experts and those who are at the heart of everything we do – our customers.

“It’s been an exciting year for East Midlands Airport having secured a new daily service to Frankfurt, a major European hub with worldwide connections, the installation of the UK’s first commercial scale wind turbines at an airport, as well as constructing the UK’s first hotel to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating, on the airport site.

British Travel Awards’ Chief Executive, Lorraine Barnes Burton, said: “The British Travel Awards is the largest awards programme in the UK, created to reward travel companies, with the winning accolade being the benchmark for excellence when it comes to finding out who really is the best in the business of travel for the UK consumer. This year the competition was fierce and East Midlands Airport is to be congratulated on their achievement.”

Ryanair, one of the original cheap airlines, recently launched a route from East Midlands Airport to Dublin, Dinard and Knock throughout November and December.
