The number of flights between Abu Dhabi and Manchester has been doubled by Etihad Airways.

In a bid to boost relationships with the North West of England, Abu Dhabi’s flagship carrier – which is backed by the state – will now run 14 flights a week between the two cities.

Originally, Etihad promised it would run 10 flights a year, so has gone over and above its promise to passengers to better connect the two buzzing hubs.

Etihad is one of the three largest airlines within the Gulf region, and all are concentrating on increasing flights to regional UK airports in a bid to challenge carriers which focus on long-distance transfer passengers, such as British Airways.

Alongside the news from Etihad, Emirates announced earlier this year that it would add a third flight each day between Manchester and Dubai. Meanwhile, not to be left out, Qatar Airways’ Doha route changed from once a day to twice a day from August 1.

Etihad has just announced a 10-year partnership deal with Manchester City football club, which is owned by Abu Dhabi.

The £294 million deal will see the carrier’s name being put on the team’s shirts, stadium, new training ground and a youth development centre.
