Regional airports across the UK are anticipating an increase in the number of people looking to get away over the festive period.

Durham Tees Valley Airport is expecting 13,000 people to pass through its doors over Christmas and New Year, with Flyglobespan flights to sunnier climes such as Alicante and Malaga proving particularly popular.

At the same time, East Midlands Airport staff are anticipating as many as 170,000 passengers at the hub over the two-week festive period, representing a 13 per cent increase on last year’s figure.

“Christmas and New Year has always been a popular time of the year to escape the cold winter weather and see friends and family,” said Penny Coates, the airport’s managing director.

“The winter flight programme is full of great winter sun destinations, city breaks and ski routes including new winter routes Goa and Innsbruck.”

East Midlands is set to see eight arrivals and nine departures on Christmas Day itself, with flights setting off to Alicante, Malta, Copenhagen, Oslo and a new route – Islamabad via Sarjah.
