Heathrow East, the much vaunted replacement for Terminals 1 and 2, will not open in time for the 2012 Olympic Games.

That is according to The Telegraph, which cites sources as saying that BAA believes its current timetable for completion is unrealistic and will need to be pushed back

The new facility had been widely billed as the ‘gateway to the 2012 Olympics’, prompting harsh criticism from observers who believe work should have begun sooner.

Theresa Villiers, the Conservative’s transport spokesman, described the delay as “yet more embarrassment for BAA” which would rightly leave airline customers “fuming”.

“BAA need to get their act together,” she told the newspaper. “Not just on Heathrow East but on making the airport better across the board.

“The performance of Heathrow will play a major part in determining whether the 2012 Olympics are a success or not and we need a much higher quality of customer service.”

A spokesman for BAA said the regulator still hoped to have “at least part of Terminal East” ready for the Olympics.
