Hertz has released a global car-hire sale, offering 33 per cent off car rental in 80 countries, across six continents.

Whether you are flying to New Zealand for the Rugby World Cup or perhaps looking for a low-cost car rental for a European city break, you could bag yourself a bargain.

The car-hire discounts, range from 15, 20 or 33 per cent depending on the location. Countries where it is possible to receive up to 33 per cent car hire discounts include: Germany, Belgium, Ireland, France, Greece, Wales, Norway, Spain, Denmark and Austria.

Twenty per cent off deals are available for countries including New Zealand, USA, Thailand, Australia, Antigua, Malaysia and more.

The sale runs until 23 September 2011, for car rentals picked up by 15 December 2011.  The special rates for the six-continent sale can be obtained by quoting “CDP: 748100” while making reservations online at www.hertz.com.

In addition to these savings, Hertz is also offering discounts on their Adrenaline and Fun, Prestige and Green Collections. The Hertz Collections can be reserved by make and model.

Car-hire charges

If you intend to hire a car soon, watch out for insurance excess charges.

“This insurance often fails to protect customers from extortionate excess charges for things like a broken wing mirror, chipped windscreens or tyres that have clipped a curb,” says Mark Bower from car hire insurance website moneymaxim.

Research by Which? published in January highlighted insurance charges and undisclosed cover details on car rentals as potential problems. Cars hired in Europe come with insurance that typically excludes the first £1,000 of a theft or damage claim. In the US and Canada the situation is slightly different, with cars coming either inclusive or exclusive of insurance and customers having the option to buy their insurance at the car hire station or independently.
