Today is the 101st International Women’s Day and across the world people are celebrating female strength and achievement.

The global event was first held in 1911, when one million women and men held rallies in Austria, Germany, Denmark and Switzerland to demand the right for women to vote, work, hold public office and have equal pay.

All sorts of events are being held in Britain to celebrate International Women’s Day, but how do they mark the occasion in other countries?

Cameroon

In Cameroon, as in many African nations, they print a different, vibrantly-coloured fabric each year. This is used to create colourful outfits for the day and women attend marches and rallies to mark the day.

Bosnia

Bosnia is one of a number of countries that marks International Women’s Day with flowers. In Bosnia, women are given red roses by their husbands, brothers and fathers.

Portugal

As well as talks and presentations, women in Portugal like to celebrate International Women’s Day with “ladies-only”  dinners and parties.

China

In China, there’s a public holiday just for women. Other countries that give women the day off include Nepal, Macedonia and Madagascar.
