Wat Rong Khun in Thailand’s Chiang Rai Province is as much a work of art as it is a Buddhist temple.

The unusual design is the work of award-winning local artist Chalermchai Kositpipat who began his career painting film ads on billboards.

Also known as The White Temple, Kositpipat combines Buddhist and Hindu symbolism with more unexpected inspirations.

This mix of contemporary pop culture images (including Superman, Batman and Neo from the Matrix) with traditional religious icons has meant Kositpipat’s work has never been far from controversy.

Work on the temple started back in 1996, but Kositpipat doesn’t expect to finish his life’s masterpiece until 2070.
