Guidelines issued by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) have relaxed restrictions on travel to Kenya.

After the recent disruption, the FCO had advised against all travel to Kenya, but the warning has been downgraded, with only certain areas specified as being unsuitable for all-but-essential travel.

In a statement the government department said: “The security and political situation in the country remains unpredictable. You should avoid all public gatherings and large public meetings. Any rallies, even if advertised as peaceful, could potentially turn violent.

“Some tour operators are cancelling forthcoming holidays to Kenya. You should contact your tour operator for confirmation of this. International flights continue to operate but you should check with your airline before traveling to the airport.”

Airlines including British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are still offering their regular scheduled services to Kenyan destinations, and have continued to do so throughout the disturbances. Despite the relaxation on FCO advice, however, four major holiday chains announced that they will scrap all package holidays to Kenya. Thomas Cook, MyTravel, First Choice and Thomson have cancelled all charter flights to the country for the rest of the season.
