You no longer have to feel guilty about your carbon footprint while heading off on holiday within the UK – so long as you are staying at a Marriott.

According to the Sunday Times’s 60 Best Green Companies in Britain list, the hotel chain has been named as the greenest in the country. It came ninth in the newspaper’s rankings of green companies, earning the highest marks of any hotel.

Alongside garnering praise for its efforts to set out eco-friendly construction standards for hotel developers, Marriott was also praised for its attempts to create a predominately green supply chain. President and managing director of Marriott Europe, Amy McPherson, said, “This is a tremendous achievement as we strive to create a sustainable environment for both our guests and associates.”

The hotel chain has also pledged to lower its water and energy consumption levels by 25 per cent per room over the course of the next six years. It also plans to reduce its levels of landfill waste to zero.

Marriott has urged its customers to help it in its green outlook by reusing bathroom towels during stays, turning lights off when going out for the day and ensuring they recycle wherever possible.

In addition to its 50 green hotels located across the UK, the chain also ensures it works towards lowering its environmental impact in countries such as Brazil, which are classed as ecologically vulnerable areas.
