The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has launched a new campaign for football fans heading to South Africa in support of England’s 2010 World Cup bid.

Under the banner ‘Be on the Ball’, the initiative features a website that offers practical advice and aims to ensure UK travellers have a safe and enjoyable stay in the country.

The ‘Be on the Ball’ website features passport advice, transport information, emergency contact details and a checklist to help fans plan their trip in advance.

In a country still wracked by civil strife and violent crime it also gives indispensible tips for avoiding trouble hotspots, as well as precise details of known scams.

And for any fans who are planning to ‘wing it’ once touching down in South Africa, the FCO has some words of caution. Ticket-holders are likely to be asked to prove their ID, it warns, so people who are heading to the country without reserved seats face disappointment.

The website also urges visitors to plan journeys between stadiums well in advance, advising holidaymakers: “The distance between Cape Town and Johannesburg is 880 miles, which is the same distance as London to Warsaw and would take 17 hours to drive.”
