For most newlyweds, the honeymoon is the chance to take a few weeks off and bask in marital bliss, but where are couples choosing to honeymoon? A beach in the Caribbean, or maybe on a cruise around the Mediterranean? Not according to a new survey, which has found that the destinations atop most couples’ honeymoon list are slightly more unusual.
A poll by Unique Honeymoons magazine has found that 81 per cent of couples are ditching the traditional beach honeymoon in favour of the adventure of a lifetime.
And despite many people struggling with their finances at the moment, only 3 per cent said they would choose to have a budget honeymoon and only 4 per cent said they would have a short trip. So which destinations are newlyweds choosing?
Tanzania
This beautiful African country topped the poll of newlyweds’ favourite destinations. It’s easy to see why – with stunning scenery, gorgeous beaches and an abundance of wildlife, you won’t forget this honeymoon in a hurry.
Burma
This under-discovered country doesn’t exactly scream just-married romance, but Burma (also known as Myanmar) came second in the honeymoon poll. On the tourist radar again following Aung San Suu Kyi’s release and elections in 2010, Burma is full of history, culture, religion and gracious locals.
Kyrgyzstan
A unusual choice, Kyrgyzstan just scraped into the list in tenth place. You might not think this “Stan” has much to offer a newly married couple, but the landlocked and mountainous Central Asia country has some beautiful landscapes.
Namibia
Another African country, Namibia was the fourth most popular destination on the list. The west-African country offers coastline, desert and the A-List seal of approval from the Jolie-Pitts.
