What do sardines, a kettle and a nun’s outfit have in common? No, they’re not the most common things found in the office after a Christmas party. They were all included on a list of things we like to pack for a holiday, discovered by British Airways.

The survey has revealed the nation’s holiday luggage habits, and found the weird and wonderful things we love to take on holiday.

It seems that many of us do not wish to forgo home comforts: sardines, peanut butter, Marmite and even tomatoes were among the most popular food items that we like to take abroad.

Fancy dress nuns’ outfits, kettles and potato peelers were some of the other items that we apparently just can’t live without for a week or two.

“We don’t really want to have to choose between books, toiletries or tea-bags, or to dress kids in half their holiday clothes just to avoid excess baggage fees,” said Abigail Comber, British Airways’ head of brands and marketing.

“Something as basic as checking what your baggage limit is on your chosen airline will help. We know from the research that 23 per cent of people don’t look into it before they get to the airport.”

But our weird packing habits do not end there, as the survey found that we love to over-pack. It was found that nine out of ten holidaymakers don’t use up to 30 per cent of the items they take away with them. And almost half of us take more than three pairs of shoes on a week-long holiday.

We can understand the shoes, but it was also found that one in eight of us take more than three towels with us! You do know that many hotels provide towels, right?
