A new poster and leaflet campaign at airports will make it easier for passengers to understand the EU-wide airport security measures due to be introduced on November 6.

New regulations brought in over the summer proved confusing for many travellers and caused hold-ups. However, posters at airport terminals and leaflets at check-in desks, which will explain the European rules visually and in easy-to-understand language, should help to inform the public and cut queues.

The campaign will be rolled out across Europe in order to communicate the security measures in a consistent manner.

A spokesman for the Association of European Airlines (AEA), which created the campaign together with airport association ACI and the European Commission, said: “By making sure that our passengers have made the appropriate preparations, we hope that waiting times will be reduced to a minimum.”

The campaign will remind passengers that:

– You can only take small quantities of liquids (which include creams, sprays, gels, toothpaste, etc) in hand luggage, in small containers of less than 100ml each that must be carried in a transparent plastic bag;

– You must present all liquids to the security staff; remove your jacket or coat at the security checkpoint; and remove laptops and other large electrical items from your hand luggage;

– You can still pack liquids in check-in baggage and you can still buy drinks from airport shops beyond the check-in point.

Copies of the poster and leaflet can be downloaded at the AEA website. Passengers are also advised to check their airline’s website before they travel to the airport.
