Glasgow Prestwick Airport could soon be closed during the nights, as its operator looks to cut costs.

That is according to The Evening Times, which has reported that the regional hub is attempting to formulate a plan to boost revenue and is considering shutting the airport from midnight to 6am.

This option is being explored as currently the airport does not operate any services during this period, while it will also reduce the need for extensive redundancies.

Jim Winter, Unite official, believes that this decision could have serious implications for the airport’s security.

He told the local newspaper: “Airports are always at risk of security breaches and protests. There were instances where people made attempts to scale the perimeter fence during the G8 summit protests.”

Glasgow Prestwick Airport is Scotland’s fourth largest airport in terms of passenger numbers and handled just more than 2.4 million travellers in 2007.
