Two Scottish firms could be about to revolutionise the way we board aircraft with their new mobile phone boarding card system.

Real Time Engineering and Mobiqa have jointly launched RT-MobiTicket, which delivers boarding pass information straight to mobiles, PDAs or Blackberrys.

Technology from Mobiqa encodes a passenger’s details using a 2D barcode, which can then be read straight from the mobile device by scanners that are also used for “print at home” boarding cards.

This means that passengers can check in at home or at the office over the internet and do not need to worry about printing out a boarding pass.

The service can be simply integrated into any carrier’s website and airlines do not need to implement any direct links with the mobile networks.

“The launch of RT-MobiTicket ensures that passengers always have their boarding passes available,” said Real Time’s technology manager, Alastair Deacon.

“RT-MobiTicket also provides airlines with opportunities to enhance the passenger service through mobile updates, or to generate additional revenue from premium check-in services.”

The official launch of the product will take place at the upcoming Passenger Terminal Expo in Barcelona.
