Lagoons are a lot like lakes but they’ve got a more aesthetically pleasing name. The actual difference is that lagoons are just offshore from the sea and tend to contain more swamp monsters.

Finding a lagoon can be magical, particularly when there’s hardly anybody around. Here are a few places where the secret lagoons might not stay that secret forever so check them out as soon as you can.

Kiritimati, Kiribati

Almost half of the island of Kiritimati (also known as Christmas Island) in Kiribati is covered in lagoons, so you’re bound to find one or two to yourself.

Kiribati is also one of the first places in the world to celebrate New Year’s Eve each year, so combine that with a dip in a lagoon and you’ll be winning at life.

Hidden Lagoon – El Nido, Philippines

Hidden Lagoon may sound like more of a label than a name, but it is a fitting one. The only way to access it is through a crack in some rocks on a tiny beach.

The whole area of El Nido is littered with magical lagoons, beaches and rocky outcrops, so even if you can’t find Hidden Lagoon, you won’t mind.

Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

This UNESCO World Heritage site is full of spellbinding things to see as you weave amongst the thousands of limestone islands.

There are lots of hard-to-spot caves that will open up to new pathways and secret lagoons, so you keep your eyes open.
