British holidaymakers are likely to be flocking to Spain’s sunny resorts in even greater numbers this year, after new figures showed that costs involved with Spanish holidays had fallen by more than 36 per cent since 2007.

Post Office Travel Money surveyed the average costs of holidays to 14 destinations popular with British travellers, and found that Spain offered the best value for money for ten typical items necessary to buy when on holiday.

The ten items – including sunscreen and cigarettes – totalled just £42.15 when purchased in a Spanish holiday resort. Also registering relatively cheap costs were the increasingly popular eastern European resorts in Bulgaria, where the items came to £43.50.

At the other end of the scale, a ‘staycation’ at in Brighton would see the ten items cost £77.01, while sun-seeking in Miami, Florida incurred the greatest costs, with the ten items coming to £92.81.

Among the medium-haul value for money destinations, Greece and Turkey both saw the prices of their ten items fall significantly from the figures for last year, with Greece’s total falling by ten per cent and Turkey’s by a whopping 14 per cent.

The Post Office’s head of travel money, Sarah Munro, said, “While Spain is undoubtedly best value overall, the healthy price fall in Greece means that this traditional favourite can once again be considered a good bet for wallet-watching holidaymakers.

“In fact the eastern Med looks a good choice all ways round as prices have fallen significantly in Turkey after 2010’s sharp rises,” she added.
