A legal challenge protesting the decision to increase London Stansted Airport’s flight capacity by ten per cent has been dismissed.

The High Court rejected the lobby group Stop Stansted Expansion’s objection to the expansion of services, describing the complaint as “unjustified and without substance”.

The decision to increase flights from the airport’s existing runway was made by the government in October 2008, with passenger numbers expected to climb from 25 million annually to 35 million.

Nick Barton, Stansted Airport’s commercial and development director, was satisfied with the court’s verdict.

He said: “The decision secures our future and ensures we can continue investing in the airport to deliver sustainable improvements in the passenger experience and airline operations through modern facilities and better service standards.”

London Stansted, which is located in Essex, is currently the third busiest airport in the UK and a major hub for a selection of European budget airlines.
