Councillors have rejected expansion plans at Stansted Airport that would have seen an increase in passenger numbers.

Uttlesford District Council refused BAA’s application to expand the use of the existing runway at the airport, saying an increase in flights would impact on noise levels and the quality of life in the area.

BAA said it would appeal against the decision and that the issue would be decided at a public inquiry.

Mark Gayler, leader of Uttlesford District Council, said: “The evidence is clear. The impact of the proposed increase in flights and passengers would have an unacceptable impact on noise levels, air quality and the overall quality of life.
