James Cameron, acclaimed director of Avatar and Titanic, became a real-life action hero when he ventured to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

In a stunning feat of endurance, Cameron plunged seven miles to the world’s deepest point – the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean.

He returned to the surface earlier today, emerging victorious from his cramped one-man submarine. And in true director style, he captured the whole thing in 3D.

The footage will form part of a documentary, but if you can’t wait for that there is plenty of ocean life to be seen at far more human-friendly depths.

Malaysia

It may not be as famous as the likes of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, but Malaysia has some of the best marine habitats in the world.

The huge coral reefs found off the coastline offer some truly idyllic diving locations, and with thousands of species of fish there is plenty to see underwater.

Tobago

As you might have already guessed, the Caribbean offers some of the best underwater views in the world. But Tobago has to be the cream of the crop.

Buccoo Reef in Tobago is one of the most accessible coral reefs in the world, offering a wealth of diving opportunities from beginner levels and upwards.
