The route – London Gatwick Airport to Domodedovo Airport in Moscow – will initially operate once a day before increasing to twice daily from April 18.

Prices for flights on the route start from £47.49 one-way, including all taxes and charges.

“We are delighted to offer our flights for sale for less than £100 return on this landmark route. It will be both easier and more affordable than ever before to fly between the two capital cities,” said Paul Simmons, easyJet’s UK Director.

“Flights between Manchester and Moscow went on sale last month and have exceeded our expectations in terms of demand and we expect London to perform at least as well.”

With prices of flights to Moscow historically very high, especially from London airports, easyJet is expecting its lower prices to attract significant demand.

“Around a quarter of a million passengers will fly with easyJet between London Gatwick and Moscow in our first year of operations. We look forward to welcoming our first passengers on board on March 18,” added Mr Simmons.

The low-cost airline was awarded the Moscow route by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) last year, beating off a challenge from Virgin.

“Russia has a fast-growing economy and is a country rich in culture and history. We believe that our flights will be popular with both business and leisure travellers alike,” said Carolyn McCall, Chief Executive of easyJet.

“EasyJet has proved again and again that when we enter a new market we open it up – bringing in competition and lower fares and enabling more people to travel on the route.  We look forward to welcoming passengers on board next spring.”

While Virgin claimed that the decision was bad for UK travellers as capacity will be reduced at Gatwick, the CAA said the easyJet appointment was healthy for competition on the route.
