Holidaymakers are beginning to turn their backs on large hubs in favour of more convenient, regional airports, it has been claimed.

Jet2holidays.com (website: www.jet2holidays.com) said that UK travellers are growing increasingly frustrated with the long queues and higher surcharges associated with flying from airports such as London Heathrow.

According to the package holiday firm, affiliate low-cost carrier Jet2.com (website: www.jet2.com) has seen year-on-year growth from its six UK regional bases – with two thirds of people planning peak season holidays.

Mandy Round, spokesperson for the tour operator, explained that a wider downturn in the industry appears not to be affecting comparatively hassle-free gateways such as Leeds Bradford Airport.

She commented: “The London airports maybe experiencing a backlash from travellers, but this is simply not the case in the regions.

“Regional airports are not just easier to get to, they have better and cheaper parking and far fewer queues – meaning the time spent checking in and navigating security is much more of a breeze.

“The whole experience is far removed from the chaos we’ve seen at the likes of Heathrow’s Terminal 5.”
