The UK is now officially back in recession, after the economy contracted by 0.2 per cent in the first three months of this year.

For many of us, the news will not come as a shock. With living costs going up and wages staying the same, it feels like we’ve never really been out of recession, but the figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have made it official – we’re officially in a double-dip.

So with that news in mind, we thought we’d take a look at some recession-beating getaways. So what are the best holidays on a shoestring?

Greece

Another country that is struggling with financial problems, Greece may seem like the last place to go for a budget holiday.

However, there has been a slump in tourist numbers this year, so many holiday companies are offering huge discounts on holidays.

Greece is a beautiful country with plenty to see, from Athens to the hundreds of picturesque islands.

Camping in France

One great way to save money is with a camping holiday. The accommodation may be less than five-star, but the warm sunny weather in the south of France means you’ll hardly spend any time at all in the tent.

Bulgaria

This may not spring to mind when we think of classic summer holiday destinations, but your money will go a lot further in Bulgaria than in Spain.

Research by the Post Office has found that the Eastern European country is the cheapest holiday destination for Brits this year.

With gorgeous beaches and historic cities, Bulgaria is sure to become more and more popular with families and holidaymakers alike.
