Take part in one of the world’s most famous festivals

For centuries the Venice Carnival – or Carnevale Di Venezia has been a celebrated Venetian tradition and a symbol of its elusive decadence. The first carnival, which is believed to have taken place in 1268, would have been attended by members of the Italian royal family, statesmen and foreign dignitaries. And the tradition of wearing masks was introduced as a way of concealing the identity of their wearers.

Each year the theme of the carnival changes. The heart of the celebrations takes place in St. Mark’s Square where acrobats, dancers and singers parade around captivating the crowds. But the real highlight of the evening is the extravagant masquerade balls. Men and women from all walks of life take part, proudly displaying their elaborate masks and ornate 18th-century costumes. Several events and balls take place every day of the week including the Moon Masquerade, the Ridotto and the Serenissima Gran Ball.

On the third day of the carnival “Volo dell’Angelo”, a woman dressed as an angel, makes her dramatic appearance by gliding down a rope from the St. Mark’s bell tower, scattering flowers and confetti over the crowd. The end of the carnival is marked by the San Francesco della Vigna bells tolled slowly signifying the beginning of Lent.
