Travellers keen to head for the bright lights of Cancun in Mexico can choose from a wider range of flights with news that Virgin Atlantic is to fly to the holiday hotspot.

The airline is to launch twice-weekly flights to the Spring Break capital from London Gatwick from 12 June 2012, and it is already predicting a huge response from passengers.

Richard Branson’s airline is expecting a whopping 94,000 travellers to climb aboard to new Cancun route during its first year of operation.

The Virgin President said that the Mexican resort had a thriving tourism industry, thanks to its great beaches, attractions and party-like atmosphere.

“We believe that we can drive demand ever higher by providing great competition to our rivals with our award-winning product and service.

“Cancun is one of the top five long-haul leisure destinations for UK travellers, so we are delighted to be able to add this route to [our] network. This route launch further cements our position as the UK’s leading long-haul leisure airline,” he added.

Cancun will become Virgin Atlantic’s 33rd international destination.
