New research from the Post Office has identified cities in Eastern Europe as the most affordable spots for a city break.

The City Costs Barometer recommends that travellers hunting for a weekend away without busting the budget check out Riga in Latvia, where a short break costs half as much as a similar break in Paris or New York.

Following close behind Riga in terms of cost effectiveness were Prague, Budapest, Tallinn and Warsaw, with travellers reporting the lowest holiday spend in these cities.

The Post Office took into account general holiday costs including a hotel stay in a three-star hotel, visits to three city attractions, a sightseeing tour on board a bus, a two-day travel card, airport transfers, a meal and drinks.

Head of money at the Post Office, Sarah Munro, said: “These price falls are good news for people planning city breaks this spring. However, wide variations in costs between competing cities mean that tourists really do need to do their homework before booking.”

Those not worried about digging deep could check out Stockholm, New York and Boston, which were found to be the most expensive cities in which to have a short break.
