A travel company specialising in polar expeditions has launched a new “super yacht” that promises to deliver the first ever carbon-neutral travel itinerary to Antarctica.

Quark Expeditions has launched the Ocean Diamond (pictured), the company’s newest ship, promising all of the 189 passengers who travel aboard a green travel experience.

“By operating the Ocean Diamond Antarctica voyages as carbon-neutral, we show it’s possible to visit incredible places and preserve them for future generations,” says Hans Lagerweij, president of Quark Expeditions.

“The average emissions per passenger are significantly lower than some former Quark vessels.”

In order to neutralise the effects of carbon-dioxide emissions into the atmosphere Quark’s Ocean Diamond voyages promise to offset an estimated 5,682 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) with select hydro, wind power and reforestation projects based in Turkey, Kenya, China and India.

Antarctica is one of the world’s last great adventure spots. The first voyage aboard the Ocean Diamond will depart on 3 November 2012 from the Falkland Islands, before stopping at South Georgia and Antarctica.

The trips last for between 10 and 20 days and is a must for wildlife fans. Expect to see whales, seals and, of course, penguins. If you are up for the adventure and need something to inspire you to put up with the cold – just look at this cutie below – reason enough to go to Antarctica, surely?
