Tignes has often taken a back seat to its popular neighbour, Val d'Isère, but this French ski resort has a lot to brag about. Sitting high on the Grand Motte glacier its altitude means guaranteed snow (and lots it) practically all year round – good news for those who prefer to ski in summer. Although the skiing here is challenging, especially the Aiguille Percée course, there are plenty of easy trails and good lift access in L'Espace Killy for beginners.
Five villages make up the resort of Tignes: Val Claret, Le Lac, Le Lavachet, Les Brévières and Les Boisses. The most popular are le Lac, le Lavachet and Val Claret which are connected by a free 24 hour bus service. The largest, Val Claret, has the best location at the foot of the Grande Motte funicular while the other two retain a quaint, friendly atmosphere and offer easy access to Val d’Isere. There is a good selection of shops, restaurants and bars in each village. The nightlife and après ski, however, is much quieter than Val d’Isere.
