Washington is easy to navigate, being laid out in a grid with streets in numerical order in one direction and in alphabetical order in the other. Note that the city is in four quadrants (which meet at the Capitol building), so you need to pay attention to the compass designations, such as NW. Most major attractions are in easy walking distance of each other, and the Metrobus and Metrorail (subway) system is quite good if you need to go further afield.
