The city of Hanoi, Vietnam, has been found to offer the cheapest night out of any city in the world, according to research from TripAdvisor.

TripAdvisor’s TripIndex used the pound to track the cost of a number of items during the upcoming summer season. These included costs for two people for a one-night stay in a four-star hotel, cocktails, a two-course dinner with a bottle of wine, and return taxi fares.

In Hanoi this would set travellers back just £89.93, which shows just why it is such a draw for backpackers.

Other destinations in South East Asia also came up trumps, including Bangkok at £103.38 and Kuala Lumpur at £123.86. Beijing, in China, took second place in the ranking, at a total cost of £101.37.

A number of Eastern European destinations also appeared in the top ten least expensive cities, with Budapest taking the lead at a total cost of £123.32. This was followed by Warsaw in Poland at £127.30 and Sofia, in Bulgaria, at £132.38.

“TripIndex helps travellers to see where their pound goes the furthest,” said Emma Shaw, from TripAdvisor.

“The list shows that many Asian cities, along with some European cities – like Warsaw and Sofia – are very affordable once you’re on the ground.

London took the top spot for the most expensive city at a total cost of £330.45. This was followed by Oslo at £319.62.

Zurich came in third at a cost of £310.06, followed by Paris at £306.76 and Stockholm at total cost of £302.46.

The price of hotel rooms played a key part in determining the overall costs of a night out in each city.  At £51.68 per night, Bangkok had the cheapest hotel room, with London at the other end of the spectrum at £230.39 per night.
