Situated in the Corrèze municipal district of south-west France, its winding streets are lined with medieval buildings. It is ancient, founded in the first century AD, and the boulevards that surround the town today were originally fortifications. In 500 AD, Brive-La-Gaillarde began to expand around a basilica dedicated to Saint Martin l’Espagnol. The present church building is Romanesque in style, though only a few of its original features remain; the transept, apse and carved capitals. The medieval centre of the town is its commercial district, filled with shops and cafes. Visitors will find the city hall, main police station and famous Labenche Museum of Art and History in this district. The Museum has 17 permanent exhibition rooms and a fresco that traces the history of the Corrèze region over 100,000 years. Another famous landmark is the Pont Cardinal, the bridge that travellers used to cross the Corrèze River on their way from Paris to Toulouse.
