San Pedro Sula is the second largest city in Honduras, which makes it a natural gateway to other parts of the country, as well as other destinations in Central America. Outdoor enthusiasts will want to plan a day trip from San Pedro Sula to Cusco National Park, about a two to three hour trip outside of the city. Hiking trails, waterfalls, many species of wildlife (look for howler and whiteface monkeys), and the opportunity to visit coffee plantations await visitors to the park. The park is also a good spot for birdwatchers, with almost 300 different species in residence. Another worthwhile day trip from San Pedro Sula is to Pulhapanzak Falls, the highest waterfall in Honduras.

In the city, a few other sites to note include the cathedral, and the Museo de Antropología e Historia de San Pedro Sula. This comprehensive museum of the history and culture of the region is full of interesting exhibits and artefacts to explore. There is also a gift shop and cafeteria on site.
