Telluride is located in a beautiful box canyon in the Rocky Mountains of southwestern Colorado. Surrounded by spectacular, steep forested mountain scenery, this former silver mining camp is especially renowned as a ski resort. Mining was the only industry in this remote area until the first ski lift was installed in 1972. The resort offers a good mix of slopes for beginner, intermediate and experienced skiers. Naturally, skiing and snowboarding are the main attractions in the October to April period, but during the rest of the year this fascinatingly quirky town invites visitors to enjoy hiking, mountain biking, climbing, hang gliding, horseback riding, river rafting and much more. The scenery is simply breathtaking. Bridal Veil Falls is the tallest waterfall in Colorado and is accessible to experienced hikers. A short drive away is Trout Lake, one of the most pristine high altitude lakes in Colorado. It’s a trout fisherman’s paradise where you can also enjoy kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and canoeing. Just above Telluride is the ghost town of Tomboy. You can take a guided jeep tour to this atmospheric settlement that has been abandoned since 1927. Telluride itself has a fascinating historic district; a national landmark with superb late Victorian and Gothic Revival architecture. For evening entertainment there’s bars, restaurants and the Michael D. Palm Theatre, which offers live theatrical and music performances, plus movies and simulcasts. Other attractions include the chance to take a glider flight over the area for an experience you will always remember.
Free public transport around Telluride is provided by the Galloping Goose Transit System, funded jointly by the town and county administrations. There is also a Dial A Ride service available. Linking Telluride and Mountain Village is the only transport system of its kind in North America. The Gondola runs daily from early morning to midnight all year round, offering a free 13-minute gondola ride over some truly spectacular scenery.
The closest major airport is Telluride Regional Airport (TEX) and caters for domestic flights It is located 8 miles (13 km) from the centre of the town. There is a ground transportation service operating between the town and airport with a fleet of vans, motor coaches, SUVs and shuttle buses. The nearest international airports to Telluride are Denver International Airport (DEN) and Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ). These are both about 350 miles (570 km) away, so flying in could be the ideal solution to provide you with more time on the slopes.
