There’s lots going on in Finland this summer. Here are some of the country’s calendar highlights for the coming year:

The Vaasa Choir Festival will take place between 18 and 22 May, featuring over 100 concerts to celebrate the end of the singing season. Culture vultures can also enjoy the Black and White Theatre Festival later that month between 22 and 28 May. This alternative theatre event promotes puppet theatre, dance and pantomime.

There’s even more in May too, with the World Village Festival on 28 and 29 May, which will see performance artists from around the world gather for this free cultural event. In June, music lovers will have the chance to experience the Chamber Music Festival, an internationally renowned event. Headline acts will perform at the Finnish Glass Museum’s concert hall, well-known for its excellent acoustics.

Film fans are not left out and the Midnight Sun Festival promises to be one of the major events on 2011’s cinematic calendar. The festival takes place in the village of Sodankyla, 120 kilometres above the Arctic Circle. In summer, the sun doesn’t go down, making this an amazing setting to enjoy movies and attracting major film directors from all over the world.

There’s lots more too, such as the Kuopio Dance festival, the Kallotti Jazz and Blues Festival and the Savonlinna Opera Festival. Go to www.visitfinland.com to find out more.
