London Mayor Boris Johnson’s legal campaign to prevent the expansion of London Heathrow Airport could impact on his own plans to build a replacement in the Thames Estuary.

That is according to Stephen Knight, a member of the 2M coalition, who suggested that Mr Johnson’s proposed court case against the government could hinder his own airport plans if it is based on the environmental impact of increased flight capacity.

Mr Knight claimed that alternative modes of transport offer a more viable alternative to the construction of a third runway at Heathrow, which would increase its annual flights to more than 700,000.

However, Transport for London’s director of transport, Kulveer Ranger, explained that this viewpoint is not “realistic”. He said: “It is the job of the mayor to propose what is best for London.”
