Launched last month on five initial routes – Amsterdam, Dubrovnik, Jersey, Tunis and Turin – the new fare type is already proving to be a hit with BA passengers.

From April 2 travellers can take advantage of hand baggage-only fares on all remaining routes to short-haul destinations from Gatwick Airport.

The fare allows passengers to take a good-sized carry on case (56cm x 45cm x 25cm) on to flights, as well as a laptop bag or handbag.

Children will also enjoy the same luggage allowance as adults, allowing families to pool their luggage together.

Peter Simpson, director of Gatwick for British Airways, said: “The new fares have been very well received by customers and we have now decided to make the discounted prices much more widely available.

“We are confident that they will prove popular during the busy summer season as short-haul customers continue to take advantage of our generous two-bag hand luggage policy.

“Those who still want to check in a bag will simply pay the same price they do now.”

British Airways has also recently announced that the inaugural flights for the UK’s first A380 “superjumbo” aircraft will run on the “Red Carpet Route” to Los Angeles from October 15.

Tickets for the route are on sale now, and start at £499 return in World Traveller (economy), with those wanting to move up to World Traveller Plus paying a special upgrade of £380. Return fares on Club World start from £3,800 for two people (£1,900 each).

“The A380 is a great aircraft that has been developed with huge amounts of British engineering ingenuity,” said Keith Williams, chief executive of British Airways.

“London and Los Angeles are two world-leading cities, and we are proud to be the first airline to connect them with the A380.”
