South Africa is preparing for one of the hottest events on its calendar, the Pride of Cape Town.

The arts event, which kicks off today (27 March), will feature a host of musicians and artistic performances.

The public event will see 50 life-sized lion sculptures paraded at the V & A waterfront in the aid of the international wildlife charity, Born Free Foundation.

The Pride of Cape Town aims to raise money for the charity to protect and conserve lions in the wild.

To do this, Born Free is inviting companies and private individuals interested in sponsoring a lion to an evening of entertainment.

Queen guitarist Brian May and hit West End singing sensation Kerry Ellis are set to make special appearances at the Grand Café & Beach Restaurant, Cape Town for the event, which is invitation only.

“It will be incredible to be back in South Africa,” said Brian May.

“By creating this amazing art event we hope not only to inspire the public but also attract the support of the corporate sector, raising funds to help protect and conserve a species which, across much of Africa, is now in serious trouble.”
