In a bid to increase the electric car trend in the UK, London Gatwick has kicked off a campaign encouraging travellers to use them.

As part of a partnership with the zero emissions Nissan Leaf car, the London hub has rolled out new facilities for charging electric cars. There are eight public charging points being created at the airport, located in the short-stay car parks in both the north and south terminals.

Each of the charging points will be free of charge for motorists to use over the course of the next year.

In another move to encourage the electric car take-up, Gatwick is also offering free parking for electric car owners for up to four hours. This time period will give them enough time to charge the car’s battery to half its full capacity.

Chief executive at Gatwick Airport, Stewart Wingate, said, “Opting to partner with Nissan Leaf0 to promote and support the use of electric vehicles was an obvious choice for us as the brand’s goals fit with our own values and aspirations at Gatwick.

“We are driving a programme to incentivise the use of cleaner vehicles across the airport community and have set ourselves an ambitious target to push our own use of low-emission vehicles to 20 per cent by 2015,” he added.
