Refurbishment work at Heathrow Terminal 4 looks set to reach a milestone with the completion of key structural work next week.
The first phase of steelwork is due to be fully erected in a matter of days, paving the way for construction to begin on the terminal’s new check-in hall and lounges.
Check-in capacity will be doubled once the project has been completed – just one of several ongoing schemes, including the Heathrow East replacement for Terminals 1 and 2.
The re-designed Terminal 4 will include a transparent ETFE canopy and full-height frameless glazed facade, as well as a three-story airside building partly cantilevering over the airfield grounds.
Commenting on the scheme, Julian Sheppard of Buro Happold told The New Civil Engineer: “The existing physical site-specific constraints and ‘live’ environment have made the project extremely challenging.
“However, we believe that once the project is complete, Heathrow’s Terminal 4 will offer a far more pleasant experience and environment for passengers, as well as being more spacious and secure.”
