When it comes to packing for a holiday, there are certain items we all immediately throw in the suitcase. A plug adapter, some clean underwear and a few good books are usually among the most popular items. (Featured image is by WordRidden)

Yet for many Brits, it seems there is one essential holiday item that we just can’t do without – a nice cup of tea.

Research has revealed that almost a third of British holidaymakers – 31 per cent – always pack teabags when they head off abroad.

It should come as no surprise that so many of us pack teabags for our travels; we Brits love a cuppa and sometimes only the best of British will do.

The research surveyed 2,000 people to find out what the nation’s travel habits are. Top of the essential travel item list was an adapter, with 71 per cent of people packing this for a trip abroad.

Showing that we have become a nation of tech-savvy travellers, tablets and smart phones were named as the second-most popular travel item, with 62 per cent of us never forgetting our gadgets.

“The psychology of the suitcase is an interesting concept, and reveals a lot about us as individuals,” said Joanna Wild, from The Co-operative Travel, which carried out the research.

The top five most essential travel items were slightly more predictable than tablets and tea. A towel and hair straighteners came in fourth and fifth place respectively.

“It’s not just what we pack, it’s how we pack too. Brits seem to have strict rules for folding or rolling, layering and ordering items inside their case,” added Ms Wild.

“Packing differs by country too, with the suitcase of a Belgian tourist being arranged differently to a British holidaymaker. The art of packing reveals a true piece of our national psyche.”

So, the next time you’re packing for a holiday and are wondering if it’s OK to take tea or not, don’t worry, everybody else is probably doing it!
